FosterLog Privacy Policy

Last updated 6 October 2026 · applies to FosterLog 1.1 and later

The short version. FosterLog collects nothing. There is no account, no analytics and no server. Everything you record — children's names, notes, documents, photos, videos, mileage — stays on your own device, in your own iCloud account if you choose, and in backup files you create yourself. We cannot see any of it.

Who this is for

FosterLog is used by foster and kinship caregivers to keep records about children in their care. The records you keep here are among the most sensitive a person can hold, and the app is built so that no copy of them ever reaches us.

What we collect

Nothing. There is no sign-up, no email address, no username, no device identifier and no usage tracking. We do not use analytics, advertising, crash reporting or any third-party code that transmits data. Our App Store privacy label is “Data Not Collected”.

Where your records live

Password-protected backups

When you set a password, the backup file is encrypted on your iPhone with AES-256-GCM, using a key derived from your password (PBKDF2-SHA256). The password is never stored or sent anywhere. Without it, the file can't be opened — not even by us, so we can't help recover a forgotten password. If you choose not to use a password, anyone who obtains the file can read it, so keep it somewhere private.

Restoring a backup

Restoring reads a backup file you pick and replaces the records on that iPhone. The file is fully checked before anything is replaced. Photos and receipts that belonged only to the replaced records are removed from the device.

Permissions the app asks for

Calendar: “Add to Calendar” opens Apple's own event editor. FosterLog does not ask for access to your calendars and can't read them. Only the child's initials are placed in the event title, because calendars often sync to other services. You review the event before saving it.

Decline any permission and the rest of the app keeps working.

Exports and sharing

PDF reports and CSV files are generated on your device. They leave it only when you send them yourself — for example to a caseworker by email. “Share FosterLog” sends only a link to the App Store, never your records.

Children's data

Records in FosterLog often concern children. Because the app transmits nothing to us, no child's information is ever collected by us, shared, or used for any purpose. FosterLog is a tool for the adult keeping the records; it is not directed at children.

Purchases

FosterLog Pro is a one-time purchase handled entirely by Apple (and can be shared through Apple Family Sharing). We never see your name or payment details — only whether this device holds a valid purchase.

Deleting your data

Delete a record and it is gone from the device. Settings ▸ Delete all data removes every child and record. Deleting the app removes its on-device data. To remove the iCloud copy (Pro), open Settings ▸ [your name] ▸ iCloud ▸ Manage Account Storage, find FosterLog and delete its data. Backup files you created are yours to delete wherever you saved them.

Your rights

Laws such as Quebec's Law 25, PIPEDA, the GDPR and the CCPA give you rights to access, correct, export and delete personal data held about you. We hold none — your records are already entirely in your hands.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Any change to what the app collects would be described plainly here first.
